Buttermilk Biscuits

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
2 tsp. double-acting baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
5 TB. unsalted butter
3/4 cup buttermilk


  1. Preheat oven to 450 deg. F.
  2. sift together dry ingredients.
  3. cut in butter with pastry blender or fork, until well blended.
  4. add buttermilk and lightly mix.
  5. turn dough out onto a floured board, knead it briefly, then roll out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. cut with a biscuit cutter.
  6. bake for 10 to 12 min.
